Has America Gone to Shit?
No, but really, in all seriousness has every citizen in America gone to take a shit recently? How else do you explain toilet paper flying off the shelves?! I recently overheard some fellow coworkers chatting amongst themselves in the office. One of them made a remark about how grocery stores are totally crazy right now and another brought up what I like to call The Great TP Crisis of 2020. In case you guys were like me and did not go crazy and panic over this pandemic, you might not have been to a grocery store or Target/Walmart recently. I just went today because things have gotten crazy here in Boston about 24 hours after the news proclaimed that Boston is exactly what happened in the beginning in Italy. Of course, naturally, that would scare people, so on top of the already freaked out general population, this news pushed most people over the edge. Anyways, I digress, in many towns across America, people are noticing that amongst sanitation supplies (i.e. wipes, hand sanitizer, and masks), that toilet paper of all things has been completely wiped out. People have been posting photos. Where there used to be aisles of toilet paper and you could not only get a few packs but you had your pick between Charmin, Angel Soft, and Cottonelle just to name a few, now there are empty shelves and broken dreams. So, when one of my coworkers responded to the question posed, “why is everyone buying toilet paper?” I listened. This is where it gets amusing. The coworker simply said, “we are all buying it in case we get diarrhea!” After controlling my laughter, I began to wonder, is this why all Americans are buying toilet paper? Are they worried that in the coming weeks they could magically get explosive diarrhea and go through an ungodly amount of toilet paper? Or is it that, even more than food, Americans value toilet paper as the number one necessity? Herd mentality is a real thing and so is sensationalizing but it leads me to wonder, who started The Great TP Crisis of 2020? While you sit there Google searching to find the answer let me know but I also wanted to leave you with one last thought for this topic (specifically The Great TP Crisis of 2020 as more coronavirus stories are to come). As I said previously, I find this craziness to be just that, crazy! But, when things start flying off the shelves you get worried that what if, when you really need something it will not be there. So I went out and stocked up on food and supplies because a) I had been needing to get half of it anyway and b) it is chaotic and maddening out there and I would truly not like to go back to the grocery store or Target anytime soon and face the hoards of the chaotic clusterfuck that are American grocery stores right now. Also, looking back in twenty years, I want to tell my future family, that yes, I may have been a bandwagoner, but nevertheless, I was part of The Great TP Crisis of 2020.
Until next time!
